Herpes is a viral infection caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)
It is a lifelong condition that can manifest as oral or genital sores, with periods of dormancy and reactivation. Herpes is highly contagious and spreads through direct contact with infected skin, mucous membranes, or bodily fluids.
Types of Herpes
- Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1):
- Commonly causes oral herpes (cold sores around the mouth and face).
- Can also cause genital infections through oral-genital contact.
- Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2):
- Primarily causes genital herpes.
- Transmitted through sexual contact
Symptoms
Symptoms of herpes can vary widely. Many people with HSV are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms that go unnoticed.
Oral Herpes (HSV-1):
- Cold sores or fever blisters on the lips or mouth.
- Tingling, itching, or burning sensations before blisters appear.
- Swollen lymph nodes, fever, or sore throat during initial outbreaks.
Genital Herpes (HSV-2):
- Painful blisters or ulcers in the genital or anal area.
- Itching, burning, or tingling sensations in the affected area.
- Painful urination or discharge in some cases.
Other Symptoms:
- Flu-like symptoms during initial outbreaks (fever, headache, muscle aches).
- Recurrent outbreaks are typically milder than the initial one.
