Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by the Plasmodium parasites
Transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. While it is treatable, prevention is critical in reducing its impact, especially in malaria-endemic regions.
Precautions to Prevent Malaria
1. Avoid Mosquito Bites
- Use Insect Repellent:
- Apply repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, or IR3535 on exposed skin.
- Wear Protective Clothing:
- Long-sleeved shirts and long pants, preferably light-colored.
- Use Mosquito Nets:
- Sleep under insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) or long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs).
- Install Screens:
- Use window and door screens to prevent mosquito entry.
- Stay Indoors:
- Remain in well-screened or air-conditioned areas, especially from dusk to dawn, when Anopheles mosquitoes are most active.
Use Preventive Medications
- Antimalarial Prophylaxis:
- Take prescribed medications if traveling to high-risk areas.
- Common options include Atovaquone-Proguanil, Doxycycline, or Mefloquine.
- Follow the regimen strictly (before, during, and after travel).
